A truck chassis provides the technical foundation, but the body determines what the vehicle can actually do. The right body protects the cargo, speeds up loading and unloading, and supports the driver’s daily workflow.

There is no universal solution for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Urban distribution has different requirements from refrigerated transport, landscaping, construction logistics or the movement of large machinery. The ideal truck body is shaped by the cargo, route, loading process and frequency of use.

Six body types

1. Enclosed box body

An enclosed box body has solid walls and a fixed roof. It protects cargo against weather, dirt, damage and unauthorised access. Typical applications include distribution, removals, furniture, equipment and general freight. The body can be constructed from plywood, aluminium or lightweight sandwich panels. Rear doors, side doors, roller shutters and a tail lift can be added to support the required logistics process.

2. Curtainsider body

A curtainsider combines generous loading volume with fast access from the side. Pallets, long goods and bulky items can therefore be loaded and unloaded efficiently by forklift. Options include a sliding roof, rear doors, tuck-away tail lift or a combination of rigid walls and sliding curtains. This makes the body suitable for distribution, industry, horticulture and general transport.

3. Insulated or refrigerated body

An insulated body limits temperature changes inside the load compartment. For active temperature-controlled transport, the body is equipped with a refrigeration or freezing unit. This type is suitable for food, flowers, pharmaceuticals and other temperature-sensitive goods. Internal compartments, side access and a tail lift can support distribution routes with multiple deliveries.

4. Open platform or dropside body

An open platform provides direct access to cargo and is suitable for items that cannot easily be carried inside an enclosed body. Examples include building materials, fencing, machinery, landscaping equipment and unusually shaped loads. Dropsides, stakes, toolboxes, load-securing systems and a loading crane can be incorporated. The result is a practical working platform and transport solution in one vehicle.

5. Tipper body

A tipper uses hydraulics to tilt the load body to the rear or in several directions. Sand, soil, green waste, rubble and other loose materials can therefore be unloaded quickly. Rear tippers offer a simple and robust solution. Three-way tippers provide more unloading flexibility at sites with limited manoeuvring space. Material choice, payload and wear resistance are especially important for this type of body.

6. Swap, combination or specialist body

Some operations do not fit into a single standard category. A swap-body system allows multiple bodies to be used on the same vehicle. Combination bodies can unite an enclosed cargo area with a curtainside section. Multi-level loading floors, access ramps, crane systems and bodies for machinery or precision transport also belong in this category. Here, the business process leads the design and the body is engineered around the work it must perform.

The right choice starts
with the operation

A truck body must fit not only the goods but the entire logistics process. How will the vehicle be loaded? From which side does the driver need access? Will a forklift be available? Does the cargo require temperature control? How much usable payload must remain?

The route matters as well. Urban distribution requires manoeuvrability and fast access, while construction and landscaping demand durability, open loading and easy unloading. For intensive distribution, a tail lift, low loading height and multiple access doors may be essential.

Answering these questions early creates a body that does more than fit the chassis. It saves time and makes daily operations safer and more efficient.
